On the Spot Ideas
Notes from the field, Upasana Pathak
“Everywhere we went, young people came up to us with questions and ideas. We were overwhelmed by their on-the-spot business ideas. In Arjun Camp in Vasant Kunj, a group of young women said they wanted to set up water connections and supply water to every household for a monthly fee. They live in a hilly terrain and have to climb all the way downhill to get water, as they have no pipeline connecting their houses. Another set of young women told us they wanted to make decomposing pit for solving the sanitation and waste problem in the slum.”
“In Daya Basti, a young man said he wanted to start a waste collection business where waste would be collected from everyone’s houses and brought to a common place to be segregated. He wanted to buy a truck, which would help him carry the waste to the common disposal ground which is far away from railway track.”
“A wonderful suggestion came from the head person of the Mosque in an unauthorized colony in Vasant Kunj, who allowed us to put up posters in the common prayer ground where lot of young people come every morning and evening to pray. Some people were apprehensive about putting up posters in the mosque but the leader felt that it’s a fantastic opportunity for the young people and they should not miss it out. He asked for our pamphlets and told us that when people approach him for information, he would give out the pamphlets to them.”
We thank FORCE, Satark Nagrik Sangathan and All India Kabadi Mahasangh for their help in reaching out to the communities.
Breaking News: Muppets take over the GTS office
On a cold December morning, the muppets arrived at our door. Why? To film a promo for the Be! Fund, of course. What is the Be! Fund, you ask? Well, as our two wacky and lovable muppets discovered, Be! Fund is India’s first not-for-profit venture fund that will invest in young entrepreneurs, age 18-29, from low-income groups, to define and pioneer businesses that solve the social, economic and environmental problems they face in their lives and communities.
The promo, which will air on local cable channels in 50 slums across Delhi, encourages young people to choose to become entrepreneurs and apply for investments of up to Rs. 5 lakhs to start their businesses. Watch out for muppets taking over a local cable channel near you this month!
